Rosy Bindi critiques Italian healthcare management in Sapri

Former Italian Health Minister Rosy Bindi presented her book, ‘Una sanità uguale per tutti’ (Healthcare Equal for All), at an event in Sapri. During the presentation, Bindi criticized the current trend of ‘corporatization’ within local health authorities (Asl), arguing that treating healthcare as a purely economic operation risks undermining the constitutional right to health.

Bindi highlighted several critical issues facing the Italian National Health Service (SSN), including chronic underfunding and the growing risk of privatization. She noted that while Italy maintains high health standards through universalist principles, significant regional disparities persist between the North and South, as well as between major cities and internal areas.

To address these challenges, Bindi advocated for a model that integrates political vision, professional expertise, and local community involvement, rather than focusing solely on balanced budgets that may result in service cuts. She emphasized the need to protect the universalist choice established in 1978 against a shift toward insurance-based systems.
