Rotary International appoints former Irvine mayor Farrah N. Khan to lead Orange County chapter despite controversy

Rotary International has appointed Farrah N. Khan, a former mayor of Irvine, California, to head its Orange County, Los Angeles chapter. Critics point to a series of social‑media posts she made following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack, in which she described an alleged Israeli strike on a girls’ school in Minab, Iran, using the phrase “pedophiles/cannibals.” The airstrike was later identified as a U.S. operation, and the language has been interpreted as referencing anti‑Jewish tropes. Khan later said the remarks were intended about Israeli officials, but observers argue they violate Rotary’s Four‑Way Test of truth, fairness, goodwill and benefit. The controversy has prompted debate over whether her appointment aligns with Rotary’s values and history.
