Rotary International launches initiatives to eradicate polio

Rotary International members in Nigeria and Ghana are intensifying efforts to eradicate polio through new awareness campaigns and immunization initiatives.

In Abuja, Nigeria, District Governor Sikiru Adetona Owonikoko unveiled sensitization billboards to promote child immunization. He noted that the EndPolioNow campaign has prevented paralysis in over 20 million children since 1985, though the disease remains endemic in two countries.

In Ghana, the Rotary Club of Accra-Airport launched the ‘Arise for Polio 2026’ initiative. Club President David Kwatia Nyante emphasized that while wild poliovirus is now endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan, continued collaboration between governments, businesses, and health services is required to ensure no child suffers from the preventable disease.
