Rotavirus infections rise in German districts

Reported cases of rotavirus infections have increased in several German districts. In the Märkischer Kreis, cases rose from 73 in 2024 to 160 in 2025, according to data from the Robert Koch Institute.

Similarly, the Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis saw an increase from 93 reported cases in 2024 to 139 in 2025. Rotaviruses cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

Health officials from the AOK emphasize that while there are no specific medications to treat the virus, symptoms can be managed. They warn that for infants and young children, the resulting fluid loss can become life-threatening. The Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) recommends an oral vaccine for infants, the costs of which are covered by statutory health insurance providers.
