Roth River features reddish water due to high iron content

The Roth River, located in the Bavarian-Swabian region, derives its reddish hue from a high iron content in its source water. This natural phenomenon is linked to the local history of iron ore processing, which dates back to Celtic times.

The river flows north through the Neu-Ulm district, passing through several locations including Oberroth, Unterroth, Buch, Weißenhorn, and Pfaffenhofen an der Roth. It eventually flows into the Danube near Nersingen. Historically, the Roth was economically significant, supporting at least 21 watermills along its course.
