Rotterdam and Antwerp-Bruges lead EU port traffic in 2024
In 2024, European Union ports handled approximately 3.4 billion tonnes of goods, accounting for 26% of the 13 billion tonnes moved globally by sea. According to the EU Blue Economy Observatory, nearly 90% of the EU's external trade in goods is conducted via maritime routes.
Data from Eurostat identifies Rotterdam in the Netherlands as the EU's busiest port, with 397.3 million tonnes of cargo. Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium follows as the second busiest, handling 243.7 million tonnes. Hamburg, Germany, ranks third with 97 million tonnes.
Other major ports in the top rankings include Algeciras in Spain (81.5 million tonnes), Amsterdam in the Netherlands (78.8 million tonnes), and the HAROPA port complex in France (76.6 million tonnes). The Polish port of Gdańsk also remains a significant hub, handling 71 million tonnes.
