Rotterdam council seeks to close Silja asylum seeker ship

A majority in the Rotterdam city council appears to support ending the use of the Silja ship as a shelter for status holders. This move follows recent revelations of severe misconduct on board, including allegations of racism, sexism, and intimidation by managers against staff members.

Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) employees reported that complaints regarding integrity and social safety were ignored for too long, leaving staff feeling unheard. Council member Stephan Leewis described the working atmosphere as “totally toxic” and called for the urgent search of alternative locations for the 2,000 people currently residing on the vessel.

Alderman Joan Nunnely stated that the city was unaware of these specific signals until they were revealed by 1Vandaag. The COA has launched an independent fact-finding investigation into the matter. The Silja has faced previous criticism regarding poor hygiene, lack of privacy for residents, and reports from doctors concerning violence, threats, and potential abuse on board.
