Rotterdam council debates free public transport for seniors

A Rotterdam municipal councillor, appointed in 2002, highlighted that many colleagues lack awareness of their own ideological backgrounds. He criticised a coalition agreement proposal to provide free public transport for elderly residents, arguing that the cost estimates are exaggerated and that the expected savings are illusory. The councillor warned that the plan could lead to fewer passengers on metro services during off‑peak hours, increased car use, and reduced safety.

He also condemned the merger of the PvdA into GroenLinks and the policies of GroenLinks and D66, accusing them of prioritising minimal environmental gains over the welfare of older Rotterdammers.
