Rotterdam declines enforcement after Borghave residential fires

The Rotterdam municipality has decided not to take enforcement action against the Stichting Ouderenhuisvesting Rotterdam (SOR) following three fire incidents at the Borghave residential complex in Schiebroek. Although the Safety Region Rotterdam-Rijnmond identified fire safety deficiencies, Alderman Astrid Kockelkoren stated these are not considered exceptional or severe, attributing many issues to the building's age.

SOR is reportedly working to rectify shortcomings, such as improving the self-closing function of fire doors. Kockelkoren also noted that human behavior, such as propping open stairwell doors with wedges, contributed to smoke spread. While the local district council expressed concerns regarding resident impact, the municipality is considering further investigations by specialized agencies to determine necessary safety interventions.
