Rotterdam-Delft train services suspended after railway bridge arson
Train services between Rotterdam Centraal and Delft Campus have been suspended following an act of arson at a railway bridge in the Delfshaven district of Rotterdam. The incident was discovered around 02:30 on Saturday when a malfunction was reported. Upon investigation, workers found that the door to a technical room had been cut open and cables inside were burning.
ProRail, the railway infrastructure manager, confirmed that the fire was intentional and damaged cables used for overhead power supply and train safety systems. The damage assessment is expected to be complex, as underlying installations may be affected.
Police are investigating the incident, including whether it constitutes sabotage. No arrests have been made. As an alternative, NS is operating replacement buses between Delft, Schiedam Centrum, and Rotterdam Centraal. This incident follows previous acts of railway sabotage in the region, including large-scale disruptions involving objects placed on tracks during Prinsjesdag and an arson incident in Amsterdam last year.
