Rotterdam develops De Kuil residential area in Afrikaanderwijk
The De Kuil residential development is transforming the Afrikaanderwijk district in Rotterdam. The project consists of 232 homes, including apartments and flexible single-family houses, situated between Brede Hilledijk, Paul Krugerstraat, and Jacominastraat.
The development features a climate-adaptive green valley on its courtyard, designed as a natural oasis and community meeting space. Adjacent to the housing is the new Nelson Mandela School. Additionally, a new playground and dike connections are being established between Brede Hilledijk and the Huis op Zuid dike zone.
The area’s name, De Kuil, refers to its low-lying topography, which was submerged during the 1953 North Sea flood. The site was previously occupied by the De Leeuwenkuil housing complex, built in 1981 and demolished in 2014. The project aims for completion by 2026.
