Rotterdam faces debates over inclusive sports and welfare oversight

Political tensions are rising in Rotterdam regarding both social inclusion and municipal oversight. The DENK party has requested a debate with the city administration concerning the position of inclusive sports associations. While the municipality has reported investments in accessibility and new facilities, local clubs report feeling unheard and disconnected from the decision-making process. DENK is calling for a focus on whether people with disabilities can actually utilize these facilities and feel welcome, rather than just measuring the number of available accommodations.

Separately, the Kennisinstituut Jeugdbeleid Feijenoord is demanding action from the Rotterdam city council following an Ernst & Young (EY) report. The institute wants the council to address how the city handled reports of potential financial irregularities at Humanitas Welzijn, which managed welfare work in Feijenoord for years. The issue stems from long-standing concerns regarding conflicts of interest and the use of 21 million euros in municipal subsidies. An ombudsman previously criticized the city for taking too long to act on these signals, and the institute is now seeking an explanation from the current administration regarding the findings and recommendations of the EY audit.
