Rotterdam Free Furniture Festival promotes circular economy among students

The Free Furniture Festival, an initiative aimed at promoting the circular economy, has seen high demand among students in Rotterdam. Organized by the Municipality of Rotterdam, Erasmus University, and Stichting Ontspulknul, the event allows students to collect discarded furniture for free to prevent usable items from entering the waste stream.

Zero Waste Nederland, the organization behind the ZerO Waste Market, reported that the success of editions in Groningen, Delft, and Rotterdam has prompted calls to expand the concept to other student cities. The initiative addresses the annual surge in bulky waste produced when students move out of housing. By connecting departing students with new residents, the program aims to reduce the burden on recycling centers and municipal waste services.

Following the popularity of the Rotterdam event, a second edition is scheduled for September 12. Zero Waste Nederland is calling on municipalities and educational institutions in cities such as Amsterdam, Eindhoven, and Utrecht to adopt this blueprint to make circular furniture markets a standard part of the academic introduction week.
