Rotterdam increases parking rates and expands paid zones
The city of Rotterdam is implementing significant increases to street parking rates and expanding paid parking zones. In the middle zone, hourly rates will rise from €3.20 to €5.00, while the highest zone will increase from €6.42 to €7.20. Paid parking will also be introduced in thirteen neighborhoods outside the ring road. Resident parking permit costs are expected to remain unchanged at €9.50 per month.
Municipal officials have highlighted the financial implications of potential parking concessions. According to Alderman Chantal Zeegers, offering one hour of free parking outside the city center would cost the municipality approximately €55 million annually, a figure projected to reach €105 million by 2030 if two hours were provided for free. The city expressed concerns that free parking could increase traffic pressure in residential areas like Middelland and Rubroek as drivers attempt to avoid fees.
Furthermore, the city is evaluating potential discounts for sports clubs and religious organizations. A 75 percent discount for these groups could cost the municipality up to €750,000 annually by 2030. These measures come as major Dutch cities increasingly rely on parking revenue, with Rotterdam budgeting significantly more for parking levies this year compared to previous periods.
