Rotterdam police investigation launched after man dies during arrest

An investigation is underway by the Rijksrecherche following the death of 51-year-old Alfredo Goeloe during a police arrest in Rotterdam-Zuid. The incident occurred on a Saturday evening at the Vaarnerkamp after police responded to a report of a stolen fatbike.

According to authorities, Goeloe fell during a chase and was subsequently detained because he could not provide identification. Police stated he became unwell during the arrest, and despite resuscitation efforts, he died at the scene. However, social media footage shows officers pinning the man to the ground while he cries out for help. It has since been confirmed that the fatbike Goeloe was riding was not the vehicle police were seeking.

A silent march held in his honor on Monday evening ended in unrest near a police station at Zuidplein, where a group of participants engaged in vandalism and threw objects at the building, prompting a response from the Mobile Unit.

Goeloe’s eldest daughter intends to file criminal charges against the involved officers, with her lawyer suggesting potential charges of manslaughter or negligent homicide. The family has also launched a crowdfunding campaign to support them during this period.
