Rotterdam political party DENK opposes fast food restrictions
The political party DENK has criticized the Rotterdam city government for what it describes as paternalism regarding the regulation of fast food establishments. The party has submitted written questions to the mayor and aldermen concerning efforts to limit the opening of new businesses that sell unhealthy food, specifically in the Rotterdam-Zuid areas of Beijerlandselaan and Groene Hilledijk.
DENK council member Meriem Laamairi argues that such measures infringe upon the freedom of choice for both residents and entrepreneurs. The party is seeking clarification on the criteria used to define an excess of unhealthy food, the specific restrictions being considered, and the expected health benefits of these actions.
Additionally, DENK questioned why the focus is placed on fast food in Rotterdam-Zuid rather than addressing alcohol sales in other nightlife areas like Stadhuisplein and Oude Haven. The party also noted that some businesses categorized as fast food also offer healthy options like salads and vegetarian dishes, and has asked if the city explored ways to promote healthy choices without restricting business owners.
