Rotterdam Port cargo volume up 0.4% in first half of 2026

The Port of Rotterdam handled 212 million tonnes of cargo in the first half of 2026, a 0.4 % increase over the same period a year earlier. Dry bulk volumes rose 1.7 % and liquid bulk 2.4 %, while the container segment fell 0.1 % in TEU and 2.6 % in tonnage, and break‑bulk declined 1.1 %.

Port Authority CEO Boudewijn Siemons noted that the war in the Persian Gulf and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have heightened energy prices and market uncertainty, but the port’s scale and infrastructure have kept operations resilient. He highlighted recent sustainability steps: shore‑power installations for cruise ships at Wilhelminakade and Parkkade, the activation of the first segment of the national hydrogen network in Rotterdam, and the first offshore vessel refuelled with an ethanol‑methanol blend. Financially, the port posted a net result of €144.8 million and invested €126 million in the first six months of 2026.
