Port of Rotterdam explosion kills one and injures six

An explosion occurred at a Gunvor Energy refinery and fuel terminal in the Europoort industrial area of the Port of Rotterdam on Thursday morning. The blast, which took place around 11:30 a.m., resulted in at least one death and left six others injured. The victims include employees of the facility and a contracted maintenance firm.

Preliminary investigations suggest the incident may have occurred during maintenance work involving the disconnection of pipes. While authorities are investigating all possibilities, police stated there is no immediate evidence of sabotage or foul play, treating the event as a potential workplace accident.

Separately, a major power failure and a transformer fire were reported in another part of the port, specifically in the Botlek area. While some companies, including ExxonMobil, temporarily halted operations or flared gases as a precaution, emergency services have ruled out any connection between the power outage and the Gunvor Energy explosion.
