Rotterdam proposes mandatory education for LGBTQ+ hate crime perpetrators
The Rotterdam City Council has taken steps toward mandating educational courses for individuals guilty of discrimination, intimidation, or violence against LGBTQ+ people. The initiative, proposed by the VVD party, aims to move beyond simple fines to address the root causes of hate speech and physical aggression.
Council member Joey Engelen stated that the goal is to ensure citizens can walk the streets safely without being harassed or assaulted. The proposal calls on the city's alderman to consult with the Public Prosecution Service and the Ministry of Justice regarding the implementation of these mandatory courses. Potential components of the program could include facilitated dialogues between perpetrators and victims to foster greater social acceptance.
