Rotterdam receives international Global Active City label

Rotterdam has become the first city in the Netherlands to receive the international Global Active City label. This recognition highlights years of effort by residents, partners, and the municipality to prioritize physical activity, sports, and healthy lifestyles for all citizens.

The city’s approach includes integrating movement into neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces through initiatives such as Cruyff Courts, playgrounds, local sports facilities, and school-based movement programs. Investments have also been made in public spaces to make walking, cycling, and playing a natural part of daily life.

Local sports clubs, schools, healthcare organizations, and entrepreneurs collaborate to ensure sports remain accessible. Major events, including the Rotterdam Marathon and the upcoming 2026 Gymnastics World Championships, further promote an active lifestyle. Alderman Jeroen Postma noted that the recognition belongs to the entire community, including the partners and residents who work together to make the city stronger and healthier.
