Rotterdam World Gateway to invest €500 million in terminal expansion

Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) is investing approximately 500 million euros to expand its container terminal at Maasvlakte 2. The expansion includes a fourth deep-sea berth, new quay cranes, and increased automation and electrification of equipment. These upgrades are expected to raise the terminal's handling capacity to roughly 5 million TEU.

In response to the project, the political party Leefbaar Rotterdam has submitted written questions to the city government regarding the local impact of the development. The party is seeking clarity on how the expansion will affect employment, specifically regarding job creation, job loss, and the skills required for new roles. They are also inquiring about the involvement of local vocational schools and opportunities for Rotterdam-based entrepreneurs to secure contracts related to the investment.

Additionally, Leefbaar Rotterdam has raised concerns regarding energy infrastructure, asking for details on the required electricity and charging capacity needed for the terminal's electrification and whether such capacity will be available in a timely manner.
