Route 1 crash in South Brunswick injures woman after loose tire crosses divider

A 59-year-old woman from Teaneck sustained serious injuries on Sunday evening after a tire detached from a northbound vehicle on Route 1 in South Brunswick. The tire crossed the highway's concrete divider near Sand Hill Road and struck the windshield of the southbound sedan.

Emergency responders had to cut the victim from her vehicle. She was subsequently transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center for treatment.

Authorities identified the driver of the northbound vehicle as a 19-year-old from East Windsor. That individual was issued a summons for failure to maintain a vehicle. Investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of why the rear driver-side tire became detached.
