Route 66 celebrates centennial anniversary in 2026

Route 66, famously known as the ‘Mother Road’, is celebrating its centennial in 2026. Originally designated as U.S. Highway 66 on November 11, 1926, the highway spans approximately 2,448 miles, connecting Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California.

The route crosses eight states: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Its development was driven by various state highway departments, local authorities, and private contractors, with key advocacy from figures such as Cyrus Avery and John Woodruff.

Throughout its history, the highway has been defined by notable landmarks and individuals. In Illinois, the Funk family has maintained the traditional spelling of ‘sirup’ at Funks Grove in honor of Hazel Funk, who protected the farmland through a trust. In Texas, the Big Texan Steak Ranch remains a legendary stop, known for its 72-ounce steak challenge, which has been completed by world-record holder Molly Schuyler.
