Route 66 prepares for centennial anniversary in 2026

Route 66 is approaching its 100th anniversary on November 11, 2026, prompting various states and municipalities to prepare for heritage tourism and commemorative projects.

Several states are investing in preservation and marketing to capitalize on the milestone. Oklahoma has awarded more than $21 million through its Route 66 Commission, while Illinois has allocated $2 million toward specific projects as part of a larger $4.6 million tourism grant program. Arizona is promoting 385.2 miles of the historic highway, and Missouri is supporting celebrations including a dedicated monument in Springfield.

In Arcadia, a special centennial decal designed by city staff has been added to the Route 66 Bridge to honor the history of the highway.

Originally established in 1926, the 2,400-mile route connected Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California. While the Interstate Highway System led to its official decommissioning in 1985, the centennial is expected to bring renewed commercial attention to roadside businesses, including restaurants, fuel stations, and accommodations.
