Route du Rhum: Thomas Ruyant withdraws while Florian Gueguen joins for charity

Developments regarding the upcoming Route du Rhum transatlantic race include the withdrawal of defending Imoca category champion Thomas Ruyant and a new charitable mission from skipper Florian Gueguen.

Thomas Ruyant announced he will not participate in the 2026 edition due to a lack of major sponsorship required to fund his new Imoca sailboat. Despite having a new vessel ready, Ruyant stated he could not secure the necessary partnership to compete under proper conditions. He expressed his intention to focus on future competitions, including the 2028 Vendée Globe.

Meanwhile, Florian Gueguen is preparing for his third Route du Rhum participation by transitioning from the Class40 category to the Vintage Multi category. Sailing a 50-foot trimaran named ‘Graine de Courage’, Gueguen is using the race to support the Graine de Courage association, which raises awareness and funds for Parkinson's disease. The project holds personal significance for Gueguen, whose grandfather is affected by the illness.
