Rovaniemi, Finland, recognized as official Santa Claus hometown

The Finnish city of Rovaniemi, located in Lapland on the Arctic Circle, is officially recognized as the hometown of Santa Claus. This status was recently upheld by the European Union Intellectual Property Office, which confirmed the city's registered trademark.

Finland's postal service, Posti, operates Santa's main post office in Rovaniemi. The facility handles approximately 500,000 letters annually, with peak periods seeing up to 30,000 letters arriving in a single day. Since 1985, the office has processed more than 25 million letters from over 200 countries.

To address common mailing errors, Posti has launched the North Pole Redirect campaign. The initiative aims to help families in countries like the UK, US, and Canada correctly address their holiday correspondence to Finland rather than the North Pole. Special Santa mailboxes are being introduced in major cities, including London, New York, and Toronto, to facilitate this process.
