Roy Barreras announces retirement from politics and medicine

Roy Barreras, former Colombian senator, president of Congress, and ambassador to the United Kingdom, has announced his definitive retirement from both politics and medicine.

Through a message on X, Barreras reflected on a career split into two distinct 20-year periods: two decades practicing medicine to alleviate physical pain and two decades in public service seeking peace and social justice. He stated, “It is time to explore the human soul,” signaling his intention to dedicate his next chapter to literature.

Barreras, who holds a Master’s in Creative Literature from the University of Salamanca, expressed his desire to make room for a new generation to defend the social and political causes he championed throughout his career.
