Roy Barreras announces retirement from politics and medicine

Roy Barreras, a former presidential candidate and senator, has announced his retirement from both politics and medicine. After two decades in public service, Barreras stated via social media that he intends to dedicate his future to literature.

Barreras's career included serving as the President of the Senate, the Colombian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, and playing a significant role in the peace process between the government and the former FARC. He most recently served as President of the Senate during the first year of Gustavo Petro's administration and had launched a presidential candidacy in 2025. Having recently obtained a Master’s in Creative Literature from the University of Salamanca, he expressed a desire to explore the human soul through writing.
