North Carolina Senate race intensifies over public safety debates
The North Carolina Senate race between Democrat Roy Cooper and Republican Michael Whatley has intensified as debates over public safety and criminal justice policies take center stage. A recent High Point University poll shows Cooper maintaining a 5-point lead, with 50 percent support compared to 45 percent for Whatley.
Republican candidate Michael Whatley and the North Carolina Fraternal Order of Police have criticized Cooper’s record, specifically regarding a 2021 settlement that led to the early release of approximately 4,200 prisoners. Critics point to the murder of Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee, by a man who was among those released, as a primary consequence of these policies. Reports indicate a recidivism rate of 48 percent among the released group, which includes several dozen murderers.
In response to rising violent crime, the state has seen the introduction of the ‘Iryna Law’ to tighten bail rules and increase supervision of high-risk offenders. While Cooper defends his record by stating he has actively prosecuted violent criminals, opponents argue his administration’s policies on bail and prisoner release have compromised public security.
