Roy Student, gaming technology pioneer, dies

Roy Student, a prominent pioneer in gaming and gambling technology, passed away on September 5, 2026, following a prolonged illness. His career spanned approximately four decades, during which he developed foundational systems used across the global casino industry.

Student’s professional impact included the creation of player rating systems, server-based slot networks, and methods for tracking non-gaming revenue. His work helped transition the sector from manual administrative processes to automated accounting and centrally connected gaming architectures. Notable milestones in his career included securing a 1972 contract with MGM to automate casino floor accounting functions, such as managing markers and table-game bankrolls.

Throughout his career, Student held roles and affiliations with several organizations, including General Instrument Corporation, Gaming Systems International (GSI), Cyberview Technology, Applied Management Strategies, and Clarion Gaming. Before his career in technology, Student was a standout baseball player who was scouted by the New York Yankees AAA organization.
