Indonesia's Jokowi diploma scandal moves to trial as Dokter Tifa and Roy Suryo face court

Indonesian authorities have transferred the criminal case alleging falsified academic credentials of President Joko Widodo to the East Jakarta District Court. The files for Dr. Tifauzia Tyassuma (known as Dokter Tifa) and former minister Roy Suryo were received on 23 June 2026, and the court will set a hearing date after reviewing the paperwork.

Dokter Tifa, who was arrested on 19 June while preparing for a doctoral exam, described the police operation as a “drama” involving four police vehicles, orange detention clothing and an unexpected request to be handcuffed. She later cancelled her pre‑trial petition, citing the decision not to detain her during the trial and a split of the two cases (Roy Suryo – case 300, Dokter Tifa – case 301). The first hearing for Tifa is scheduled for 2 July 2026 at the Prof. Kusuma Atmadja courtroom.

High‑profile lawyer Hotman Paris urged President Jokowi to curb commentary from lawyers not representing the defendants, saying the lack of Suryo’s detention “improves the president’s image.” Dokter Tifa also called on Jokowi to produce the original diploma to prove the alleged defamation case.

The proceedings have attracted extensive public interest, with multiple media reports tracking the legal maneuvers and the split strategies of the two accused.
