Royal Australian Air Force achieves milestones for reconnaissance aircraft

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) has declared Initial Operational Capability (IOC) for two advanced reconnaissance aircraft: the uncrewed MQ-4C Triton and the MC-55A Peregrine. This milestone follows extensive operational testing and evaluation, signifying that sufficient aircraft, maintenance, and trained aircrews are now in place to conduct missions.

The MC-55A Peregrine, a converted Gulfstream G550, performs high-altitude, long-range electronic intelligence (ELINT) roles. It is designed to gather data on adversary radar and communications systems, transmitting information in real-time to assist Australian and allied combat aircraft. The MQ-4C Triton, supported by Northrop Grumman Australia, provides persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities.

Additionally, the RAAF has received the first of two P-8A Poseidon aircraft upgraded with Increment 3 Block 2 enhancements. The remaining 12 aircraft in the fleet will undergo similar upgrades at the $200 million Deep Maintenance and Modification Facility at RAAF Base Edinburgh, a project supported by Boeing Defence Australia to build sovereign maintenance capacity.
