Royal author says Meghan Markle’s ego halted her rise in the monarchy

Simon Vigar, author of *The Four Wives of Windsor*, argues that Meghan Markle entered the British royal family in 2018 with the potential to become a major, Diana‑style figure. He describes her as a “massive asset” who could have been “fantastic” for the monarchy.

Vigar attributes the missed opportunity to ego clashes on both sides and broader cultural tensions within the palace. After less than two years of working royal duties, the couple stepped back in 2020 and relocated to California, ending the brief period in which her modernising influence might have taken hold.
