Royal Birkdale Hosts the 154th Open Championship
The 154th Open Championship will be held at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England, from Thursday 16 July to Sunday 19 July 2026. A field of 156 players includes defending champion and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, local favourite Tommy Fleetwood, former champion Jordan Spieth, and other top golfers such as Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Matt Fitzpatrick. The upgraded links course features a newly lengthened 18th hole and other recent renovations that make the fairways firm and the wind a decisive factor.
The tournament will be broadcast on Sky Sports and expects more than 300,000 spectators. A new “Last‑Chance Qualifier” gave England’s Joe Dean the final spot in the field. Ahead of the event, betting analysts highlighted several contenders, while English golfer Matt Fitzpatrick warned that player‑targeted gambling abuse is becoming a growing concern for the sport.
Royal Birkdale’s historic status, the strong player roster and the recent course changes combine to make this week’s Open a focal point for golf fans worldwide.
