European river cruise industry expands with new ships and itineraries

The European river cruise industry is undergoing significant expansion and operational evolution. AmaWaterways has opened bookings for its 2028 season, announcing that its fleet will grow to 38 vessels. This expansion includes the introduction of AmaMaria on the Rhine and AmaGaia on the Douro. The company is also preparing to launch AmaRudi on the Danube in 2027, which is expected to be Europe’s largest river cruise ship, featuring amenities such as a pickleball court and a Zen Wellness Studio.

To combat challenges like fluctuating water levels on the Danube and Rhine, operators are implementing technical and logistical innovations. AmaWaterways, for instance, utilizes sister-ship swaps to maintain schedules during shallow water periods, moving passengers and luggage between identical vessels to ensure uninterrupted travel.

Other cruise lines are also targeting seasonal demand. Scenic and Emerald Cruises have introduced new holiday itineraries for 2026 and 2027 focused on European Christmas markets. Additionally, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has announced an 87-night grand voyage for 2028 that combines the Amazon River with the Antarctic Peninsula. Travelmarvel is also promoting its 2027 season with airfare incentives for European river cruises.
