Royal Caribbean to acquire 50% stake in Sandals for $3 billion
Royal Caribbean has reached an agreement to acquire a 50% stake in the Sandals resort chain for $3 billion. The company intends to leverage its existing commercial channels to drive more travelers toward Sandals' land-based resorts.
Some analysts have raised questions regarding the valuation and opportunity cost of the deal. Richard Clarke, an analyst at Bernstein, suggested that Royal Caribbean might have provided more value to its shareholders through share buybacks, which could have increased earnings per share more effectively than the investment in Sandals.
Sandals, founded by Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart, has a history of adapting to consumer needs, growing from small Jamaican properties into a major resort brand. Royal Caribbean's move aims to capture more of the vacation market by integrating cruise passengers with land-based holiday options.
