Royal Library and National Museum launch postcard project

The Royal Library and the National Museum of Denmark have launched a collaborative project inviting the public to help identify the locations of thousands of historical postcards. The initiative aims to map Danish history by crowdsourcing information to pinpoint specific streets, buildings, and landmarks depicted in the images.

The first phase of the project involves 23,500 digitized postcards from The Royal Library's collections, which will be made available on the National Museum's crowdsourcing platform, ‘Hvor er det fra?’ (Where is it from?). The total collection contains approximately 312,500 postcards dating from 1888 to 2000.

By identifying these locations, the project seeks to make the visual archive more accessible to researchers, local historians, and citizens. Culture Minister Zenia Stampe noted that the project allows people to act as detectives to map streets and alleys that have changed significantly over time due to renovation or urban development.
