Royal Mail Deploys First Electric Cargo Cycles in UK Cities

Royal Mail is introducing its first fleet of electric cargo cycles, the Minimal Pedal 4, with an initial deployment of 20 units in London, Brighton and Cambridge. The cycles, manufactured at Minimal’s West London micro‑factory, can be charged from a standard three‑pin plug, travel up to 30 mph on roads, cycle lanes and greenways, and have a range of about 37 miles and a cargo capacity of 2.5 m³. They do not require a licensed driver, broadening delivery staffing options.

The rollout is part of Royal Mail’s broader plan to achieve Net‑Zero emissions by 2040, building on the introduction of micro electric vehicles last year. Mark Riley, Delivery Design Manager at Royal Mail, said the cycles will “help reduce emissions and improve air quality in the communities we serve, while creating new opportunities for people to join Royal Mail without needing a driving licence.” Minimal CEO Patrick Bion noted the move signals that right‑sized electric vehicles will be central to moving goods efficiently in cities.
