Royal Navy increases monitoring of Russian naval activity in UK waters
The Royal Navy has increased its monitoring of Russian military activity in UK waters and the North Atlantic, with operations rising 25% during the first seven months of 2026 compared to the previous year. In July, naval assets including HMS Somerset, HMS Tyne, HMS Mersey, and HMS Severn spent 21 days conducting surveillance missions.
Russian activities have included the frigate RFN Neustrashimy repeatedly entering the UK’s area of responsibility to escort vessels from Russia's "shadow fleet," which the UK uses to bypass international sanctions. On July 20, HMS Tyne monitored the Neustrashimy as it conducted gunnery exercises outside UK and French territorial waters, observing the firing of 100mm and 30mm weaponry.
In a separate development, the Royal Navy is advancing its "Hybrid Navy" concept. The "Dragon Rider" exercise successfully demonstrated the integration of multiple uncrewed systems with conventional air and sea assets, using a Wildcat helicopter to act as a data relay for drone swarms over southern England.
