Royal Philharmonic Orchestra research highlights demand for music education

Research from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) indicates a strong desire among parents in Northern England to increase engagement in classical and orchestral music. According to the study, 86% of parents in the North East and 82% in Yorkshire and the Humber believe more should be done to involve their children in these genres.

While recent data from the Joint Council for Qualifications shows a rise in music GCSE entries—with a 6.1% increase last year following an 8.7% rise in 2024—the long-term trend remains a concern. Music GCSE entries in England have declined by 25.6% since 2010. The RPO suggests that live concert experiences and school ensemble participation are critical factors in converting curiosity into lasting interest.
