Royal Theatre graffiti cleanup estimated at up to $15,000

Graffiti sprayed on the exterior of the Royal Theatre is expected to cost between $10,000 and $15,000 to clean. The Royal and McPherson Theatres Society (RMTS) reported that the vandalism occurred on a wall currently undergoing structural heritage preservation work.

Jennifer Johnson, CEO of RMTS, noted that the graffiti was applied from the roof onto a conservation area. Because the damage involves heritage brick restoration at a significant height, the costs could potentially exceed initial estimates. While the incident has diverted operational resources, it is not expected to affect scheduled performances.

Victoria Police are investigating the incident as mischief over $5,000. Staff first discovered the damage on August 3, and a formal complaint was filed on August 4. Authorities stated they intend to hold those responsible accountable.
