RPCS3 developers reject NVIDIA DLSS 5 support

Developers of the RPCS3 PlayStation 3 emulator have rejected official support for NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 technology. While modders have begun experimenting with the technology using files discovered in an early version of NBA 2K27, the RPCS3 team expressed strong criticism of the approach. They argued that the industry uses upscaling and image generation to ‘hallucinate’ details, which they believe masks a lack of proper optimization.

The RPCS3 team emphasized that their project's priority is high-fidelity emulation and maintaining accuracy to the original hardware, rather than applying post-process fixes. They noted that while they support FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR 1), that technology is a spatial upscaler that does not use neural models to alter lighting, materials, or shadows in the way DLSS 5 does.

In contrast, unofficial DLSS 5 mods are showing varied results in anime-style games. In titles like Neverness to Everness and Wuthering Waves, the technology has been used to enhance lighting and shadows, though some users noted that characters can occasionally appear with a ‘plastic’ look. Developers at Hotta Studio are reportedly among the first intended to officially integrate this AI technology into upcoming titles.
