RPCS3 emulator adds direct support for physical PS3 discs

The PlayStation 3 emulator RPCS3 has introduced a new feature allowing users to play physical PS3 games directly from a PC's Blu-ray drive. Previously, players were required to manually extract disc contents to a hard drive using external tools before the emulator could load them.

This update, described by the development team as “plug and play,” expands support across multiple operating systems, including Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD. While the process is simplified, users must still provide a decryption key in a specific data folder to allow the software to read and decrypt the disc data during execution. The update also includes optimizations for installation times when using optical drives.

Beyond convenience, the developers noted that this functionality supports game preservation, as physical media allows users to play titles without relying on active servers or commercial licenses.
