Árpád Tótth announces reforms for Hungarian hospital management

Árpád Tótth, the Director General of the National Hospital Directorate (OKFŐ), has announced a plan for radical reform within the Hungarian hospital system. Speaking at the XXXVIII Congress of the Hungarian Hospital Association, Tótth emphasized a shift toward a decentralized management model. The goal is to move away from excessive centralization and bureaucracy, granting hospital leaders greater autonomy paired with increased responsibility.

The reform aims to address critical systemic issues, including human resource shortages, aging infrastructure, and outdated medical equipment. Tótth stated that the focus will be on identifying systemic errors rather than assigning individual blame. Key priorities for the upcoming period include improving operational capacity, enhancing emergency response capabilities, and renewing digital healthcare services.

Additionally, the leadership has declared a zero-tolerance policy regarding corruption, misuse of public funds, abuse of power, and workplace harassment. To better understand local challenges, the OKFŐ leadership plans to conduct nationwide visits, intending to personally visit every hospital within the next year.
