Gotcha Gotcha Games has launched the Steam store page for RPG Maker U2U, a new PC-based RPG development tool. In a shift from previous development plans, the software will be released as a standalone application rather than requiring the Unity engine to be installed separately. This change means users will not need to install Unity Hub or create a Unity ID to use the tool.

The software introduces the Perspective 2D (P2D) Map Editor, which aims to create an 'HD-2D' aesthetic by combining 2D assets with depth and verticality. Key features include support for eight-direction movement, where existing four-direction character sprites can be used for diagonal movement automatically. The engine also supports complex vertical environments featuring stairs, slopes, ladders, and overpasses.

RPG Maker U2U will include over 100 pre-built P2D maps. The interface for the event editor and database is designed to follow the familiar workflows of previous versions, such as RPG Maker MV and MZ, to assist veteran users. The project's key visual and character designs were created by illustrator Namaniku ATK.
