RRI addresses digital disruption and algorithmic challenges
To mark its 81st anniversary, Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) is addressing the challenges of information disruption and the dominance of digital algorithms. Officials emphasized the need for the public broadcaster to maintain its role as a ‘clearing house of information’ to combat misinformation and disinformation.
Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Nezar Patria noted that digital platforms and algorithms now control audience access, often creating ‘echo chambers’ and ‘filter bubbles’ that limit the diversity of information received. He stressed that maintaining ‘information integrity’ is essential for media outlets to remain relevant in an era where algorithms dictate content consumption.
RRI President Director Hendrasmo stated that the organization must undergo radical and holistic changes to navigate the VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) era. The goal is to ensure RRI remains a credible source that helps achieve national objectives while helping the public distinguish between true and false information.
