RSPB highlights bird bath depth and heatwave fire damage to UK wildlife

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) advises that shallow bird baths – about 2 cm deep at the edges – are essential for small garden birds such as goldfinches and blue tits to bathe safely, while deeper water can be used by larger species.

Separately, the RSPB reports that a severe heatwave has ignited fires across Suffolk, destroying over 250 acres of heathland at Dunwich Heath and affecting parts of the Minsmere reserve. The blaze threatens habitats for birds, reptiles and rare butterflies, with recovery expected to take decades.
