RSPCA urges shoppers to support animal welfare on World Farmed Animal Day
To mark World Farmed Animal Day on October 2, the RSPCA is urging consumers to adopt specific shopping habits to improve the lives of farmed animals. The organization highlights that while billions of animals are reared in the UK annually, many are kept in factory farming conditions.
Campaigner Emily Harris suggests three primary strategies for shoppers. First, consumers are encouraged to act as ‘label detectives’ by looking for specific certifications such as ‘RSPCA Assured’, organic, or free-range labels, rather than relying on vague marketing terms like ‘farm fresh’. Second, the RSPCA advises shoppers to ‘look up’ on supermarket shelves, noting that higher-welfare products are often placed on higher racks rather than at eye level.
The RSPCA is also calling on the UK Government to implement clearer labeling standards to reduce consumer confusion during the shopping process.
