RTÜK imposes sanctions on Sözcü TV and Koza TV

Turkey's Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) has issued administrative sanctions against Sözcü TV and Koza TV for violating principles of impartiality, reality, and accuracy.

Sözcü TV was penalized following a broadcast on October 25 titled ‘Simge Fıstıkoğlu ile İyi Ki Hafta Sonu’. The Council determined that host Simge Fıstıkoğlu’s commentary regarding the arrest of journalist Murat Ağırel created a perception that the arrest was due to his journalistic activities. The Council also noted that the presentation of Ağırel’s claims regarding AK Party Ankara Deputy Osman Gökçek prevented viewers from forming healthy opinions.

Koza TV received sanctions for its program ‘Doğrusunu İstersen’, moderated by Evren Özalkuş, aired on October 21 and 23. The Council found that the moderator failed to question or correct claims made by guests Yüksel Selçuk Türkoğlu (İYİ Party) and Özgür Karabat (YENİ Party) concerning a fund corruption investigation, and instead appeared to validate the unverified statements.

RTÜK Board Member Tuncay Keser criticized the decisions, stating that such sanctions regarding political discussions under the guise of ‘news accuracy’ restrict press freedom and the public's right to information.
