RTL Deutschland integrates generative AI into courtroom show
RTL Deutschland, in collaboration with Constantin Entertainment, is launching a pilot project titled ‘RTL bringt KI on Air’ to integrate generative artificial intelligence into German free-to-air television. The initiative features five new episodes of the courtroom show ‘Ulrich Wetzel – Das Strafgericht’, where existing stories have been dramaturgically redesigned using AI technology.
The production process utilized various AI tools, including image processing, speech synthesis, and lip-sync adjustments. These technologies allowed for significant narrative shifts, such as changing a defendant's verdict, altering character relationships, or even performing a gender swap of the main character. In some instances, new footage of actors was integrated into original material using green screens and AI-driven synchronization.
According to RTL, the goal is to use technology as a creative tool to produce content more efficiently for both streaming and broadcast. While the AI generates new dialogue and plot developments, the broadcaster emphasized that every episode remains subject to editorial responsibility and legal review to ensure quality and accuracy.
